A charcoal mask that doesn't leave your skin tight.

The Drawing is part of Clarity Codex — a cream mask built on shea and tucuma butter rather than clay. Most charcoal masks work by drying: clay pulls water out of the skin as it sets, which is why your face feels stripped afterward and why the label tells you not to use it more than once a week. This one is an emulsion. Charcoal gives it the color and a light surface clarifying action, niacinamide and willow bark do the actual work, and the butters mean you finish comfortable instead of taut.

Formulated by Rachel, Licensed Advanced Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) and Certified Skincare Coach — barrier-conscious clarifying care, fragrance-free.

Key Actives

  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) — the most substantial active in the formula and the reason it earns its place in a routine. Well studied for helping skin look less oily, refining the look of pores, evening the appearance of tone, and supporting the look of a healthy barrier while it does all of that.
  • Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract — a natural source of salicin, related to salicylic acid but gentler and slower. It helps loosen the debris that collects in pores without the sting a direct BHA can bring.
  • Lactobacillus Ferment (Postbiotic) — supports the skin's own microbial balance, which matters more than it sounds on a clarifying product. Most things that reduce congestion do it by stripping; a postbiotic works with what is already there.
  • Charcoal Powder — used at a low level for a light surface clarifying action and the mask's grey cast. It is not the engine of this formula, and the copy on this page will not pretend otherwise.
  • Astrocaryum Tucuma Seed Butter — an Amazonian butter that melts close to body temperature, giving the mask its slip and leaving skin soft rather than squeaky.
  • Calendula and Olive Fruit Oil — the calming backbone underneath, keeping the willow bark comfortable on reactive skin.

Who It's For

Congested, oily, or combination skin. Blackheads, visible pores, the dull grey look skin gets when it needs a reset. Also for anyone who has tried clay charcoal masks and given up on the category because their skin felt terrible afterward.

If your skin is dry or currently reactive, this is still usable — but start at once a week and pay attention to how the willow bark sits with you.

What to Expect

Skin looks clearer and feels smooth rather than tight when you rinse. Pores appear less obvious over a few weeks as the niacinamide does its slower work. What you will not get is the peeled, squeaky, stripped feeling that clay masks trade on — that sensation is water leaving your skin, not congestion leaving your pores.

How to Use

  1. Cleanse and leave skin slightly damp.
  2. Apply a thin, even layer, avoiding the eye area and lips.
  3. Leave on 10–15 minutes. It will not harden or crack — this is a cream mask and staying soft is correct.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water, using a cloth if you want a little gentle friction.
  5. Follow with your serum and moisturizer.

Use once or twice a week. Start at once and build only if your skin stays comfortable.

Safety & Warnings ▾

For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Salicylate sensitivity: Willow bark is a natural source of salicin, closely related to salicylic acid. If you are allergic to aspirin or sensitive to salicylates, avoid this product.

Eye area: Avoid. If product enters the eyes, rinse thoroughly with cool water.

Charcoal and fabric: Charcoal is a pigment. Rinse thoroughly and use a dark or dedicated cloth — it can mark light towels and pale grout.

Do not use on compromised skin: Avoid on broken, sunburned, or actively inflamed skin, or within a week of a professional peel or resurfacing treatment.

Layering: Do not use on the same day as a leave-on acid or a retinoid. Give it its own evening.

Patch test: New to this formula? Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and observe for 24 hours before first full use.

Pregnancy or nursing: Willow bark is a salicylate. Consult your healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or while nursing.

Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾

Does charcoal draw impurities out of your skin?
No, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the story. Charcoal adsorbs oil and debris it can physically touch — the surface of your skin and the mouth of a pore. It cannot reach through intact skin and pull anything out; nothing applied topically can. What actually reduces the look of congestion here is niacinamide helping skin look less oily over time and willow bark loosening what sits in the pore. The charcoal contributes a light surface clarifying action and the color.

Will it dry my skin out?
No. That is the point of it. Clay masks feel stripping because clay draws water out of skin as it dries — this is a cream emulsion built on shea and tucuma butter, so it stays soft and rinses off leaving skin comfortable.

Why doesn't it harden?
Because it is not clay. Nothing has gone wrong. A cream mask stays soft the whole time it is on, and the tightening you feel with other masks is water loss, not efficacy.

Will it stain?
Not skin, but it is a black pigment — rinse thoroughly and use a dark washcloth. Light towels and pale grout are where charcoal shows up.

How often can I use it?
Once or twice a week. Because it does not strip, you can use it more often than a clay mask without consequence, but there is no benefit to daily use.

Can I use it with my acids or retinoid?
Not on the same night. Willow bark is a mild exfoliating agent, and stacking it with a leave-on acid or a retinoid is how people over-exfoliate without realizing it.

Is this product vegan?
Yes. No animal-derived ingredients, and it is cruelty-free and never tested on animals.

What's the shelf life?
Unopened, 12 months from production. Once opened, use within 6 months for best quality. Keep water out of the jar — use dry hands or a small scoop. LOT and production date are printed on each container.
