A body polish that cleanses while it exfoliates. Micronized walnut shell — fine, not gritty — and only for the body.

Surface Reset is part of Common Ritual — the line built for how something feels, not just what it does. Finely milled walnut shell suspended in a gentle cleansing base, with chamomile and lavender waters, aloe, panthenol, and white willow bark. It lathers lightly as you work, so this replaces your body wash on the days you use it rather than adding a step to the shower.

Selected for Common Ritual by Rachel, Licensed Advanced Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) and Certified Skincare Coach — chosen for its soothing base and its honest place in a routine.

⚠️ Contains walnut shell (tree nut) and hydrolyzed wheat protein. See allergen information below.

Key Actives

  • Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder, micronized — the exfoliant, and the grade matters more than the ingredient name suggests. This is a micronized powder rather than the coarse fragments walnut shell is usually associated with, milled fine enough that the sharp edges are no longer the story. Used on body skin, which is considerably thicker than facial skin. See the FAQ below for the fuller answer.
  • Decyl Glucoside and Cocamidopropyl Betaine — a mild cleansing pair, the kind used in sensitive-skin washes rather than the harsh sulfates most scrubbing washes rely on. They are why this lathers and rinses without leaving a film.
  • Chamomile and Lavender Flower Waters — the soothing base the exfoliant sits in, and a meaningful proportion of the formula rather than a token inclusion.
  • Panthenol (Pro-Vitamin B5) and Aloe — hydration and barrier support, working against the drying effect any cleansing product has.
  • Salix Alba (White Willow) Bark Extract — a natural source of salicin, adding a mild chemical exfoliation underneath the mechanical kind so less scrubbing pressure is needed.
  • Jojoba, Rosehip, and Sunflower Seed Oils — a light oil trio that keeps skin comfortable through a cleansing exfoliant, without making the tub slippery.

Who It's For

Rough, bumpy, or dull body skin. Backs of arms, thighs, shins, and anywhere that stays rough no matter how much lotion goes on. Good before self-tanner and good before shaving.

Body only. Do not use this on your face — see below.

What to Expect

Immediately smoother skin and a clean, light finish rather than the tight feeling a scrubbing body wash usually leaves. Because it cleanses as it exfoliates, you can use it in place of body wash rather than on top of it.

How to Use

  1. Wet skin in the shower.
  2. Scoop a small amount and massage over damp skin in circles. Light pressure — let the grit do the work.
  3. Work over rough areas: shins, thighs, upper arms, back.
  4. Rinse thoroughly.
  5. Follow with body lotion or a body butter while skin is still damp.

Use once or twice a week. This replaces body wash on those days — no need for both.

Allergen Information & Safety ▾

⚠️ TREE NUT. Contains Juglans Regia (Walnut) Shell Powder. If you have a walnut or tree nut allergy, do not use this product.

⚠️ WHEAT AND GLUTEN. Contains Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, and Avena Sativa (Oatstraw) Extract. If you have a wheat allergy, or celiac disease and avoid topical gluten, this is not the right product for you.

Salicylate sensitivity: White willow bark is a natural source of salicin, closely related to salicylic acid. If you are allergic to aspirin, avoid this product.

⚠️ Body only — not for the face. Walnut shell is appropriate for the thicker skin of the body and is not appropriate for facial skin. If you want a facial exfoliant, our Ritual Brightening Face Polish uses dissolving sugar and enzymes instead.

Light pressure. Let the exfoliant do the work. Scrubbing hard with any physical exfoliant is what causes irritation, regardless of what the particle is made of.

For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Not for broken or irritated skin, sunburn, freshly shaved skin, active rashes, or over eczema or psoriasis flares.

Not for intimate areas.

Patch test: New to this formula? Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and observe for 24 hours before first full use.

Take care with footing. Any product used in a wet shower makes surfaces slippery. Rinse the tub afterward.

Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾

Isn't walnut shell bad for your skin?
The criticism is real and it is worth taking seriously — but it is about two things this formula addresses. First, particle size: the micro-tear concern comes from coarse shell fragments with fractured edges. This formula uses a micronized grade, milled fine enough that those edges are not what you are rubbing on your skin. Second, placement: the controversy has always been about facial skin, which is a fraction of the thickness of the skin on your legs, arms, and back. Fine grade, body only. Both together are the answer.

So why use walnut shell at all?
Because on body skin it works, and the alternatives have their own trade-offs. Plastic microbeads are an environmental problem and are banned in many places. Sugar and salt dissolve before they finish the job on genuinely rough skin. Walnut shell is a byproduct of food production, it biodegrades, and — milled to this grade — it stays intact long enough to actually smooth a shin without behaving like sandpaper.

Does it replace my body wash?
On the days you use it, yes. There is a mild cleansing base in it — the same class of gentle surfactants used in sensitive-skin washes — so it lathers and rinses clean. No need to wash first.

Can I use it on my face?
No. If you want a facial exfoliant, our Ritual Brightening Face Polish uses dissolving sugar and pineapple enzymes, which is what facial skin should be getting.

How often should I use it?
Once or twice a week. More than that on the same areas and you will start trading smoothness for irritation.

Will it make the tub slippery?
Less than an oil-based scrub, since this one cleanses and rinses rather than leaving oils behind. Rinse the surface anyway and mind your footing.

What's the shelf life?
