Sunlit Aurantium Body Butter is part of Common Ritual — the line built for how something feels, not just what it does. This is the simplest of the butters and deliberately so: shea, a light dry-touch emollient, a little beeswax for structure, and two citrus oils. No water, no preservatives, nothing doing anything clever. It exists because sweet orange and bergamot smell like a good morning, and because shea on dry skin works.

Key Actives
- Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter — the whole substance of the formula. Rich in fatty acids and unsaponifiables that soften skin and hold moisture against it rather than letting it evaporate away.
- C13-15 Alkane — a plant-derived emollient that gives the butter its dry finish. It is the reason this sinks in rather than sitting on top, and the reason you can put clothes on afterward.
- Citrus Sinensis (Sweet Orange) Peel Oil — the bright top of the scent, cold-pressed from the peel. Familiar, warm, and unmistakably real in a way orange fragrance oil never is.
- Citrus Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, bergapten-free — the depth underneath the orange. Bergamot is what keeps citrus from smelling like candy: a little bitter, a little floral, faintly like Earl Grey. We use the bergapten-free grade specifically, which has the furocoumarins removed — the compounds that make ordinary bergamot oil a sun-sensitivity problem on skin.
- Cera Alba (Beeswax) — structure. It holds the butter firm in the tin so it melts on contact rather than arriving as a puddle in July.
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E) — an antioxidant that protects the oils in the formula from going off, and conditions skin while it's there.

What to Expect
Firm in the tin, oil on the skin. It takes a moment of warmth between your fingers before it spreads, and that pause is the formula working as intended — a butter that spread instantly would be softer and greasier than this one. The dry-touch finish means it absorbs without leaving you tacky, and skin stays comfortable for hours.
The pale gold color is the unrefined shea and the citrus oils themselves. No colorant has been added, and it does not tint skin.
How to Use
- Scoop a small amount — less than you think, this goes further than lotion.
- Warm it between your fingertips until it turns to oil.
- Press and smooth it over skin rather than rubbing briskly — arms, legs, shoulders, wherever you like.
- Best applied to slightly damp skin straight after a shower, which gives it moisture to seal in.
- Go back over anywhere that wants more. Hands, heels, and elbows usually do.

Safety & Warnings ▾
Sun exposure. Ordinary bergamot oil contains furocoumarins that make skin reactive to UV light. This formula uses bergapten-free bergamot, which has them removed, and cold-pressed sweet orange, which does not carry them in meaningful amounts. Wear it in daylight without concern. As always, daily SPF is a good idea regardless of what else you have on.
For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Contains beeswax. Avoid if you have a known bee product allergy.
Citrus sensitivity: If citrus oils irritate your skin, this is not the butter for you — the scent is entirely essential oil based and cannot be separated from the formula.
Body only. This is a rich anhydrous butter and is not formulated for the face.
Keep water out of the tin. This formula has no water and no preservative system. Introducing water on wet fingers can allow microbial growth. Use dry hands or a scoop, and close the lid firmly.
Store away from heat and light. Citrus oils degrade with warmth and sun exposure, and oxidized citrus oil is more likely to irritate skin than fresh. A cupboard, not a windowsill.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾
Can I wear this in the sun?
Yes — and that took a deliberate choice. Ordinary bergamot oil is one of the more phototoxic materials in cosmetics: it contains furocoumarins that can leave burns and lasting dark streaks on sun-exposed skin. We use the bergapten-free grade, which has those compounds removed, so this butter is safe to wear in daylight. It costs more than the standard oil, and it is the difference between a citrus butter you can wear to a picnic and one you can't.
Why is it pale yellow and not white?
Because nothing in it has been bleached. Unrefined shea carries its own soft yellow, and the citrus oils add a faint warmth on top of it. No dyes or colorants of any kind have been added.
How strong is the scent?
Present but not loud. It sits close to the skin and softens within an hour. If you want something you can smell across a room, this is not it.
Will it stain my skin or clothes?
Not skin. Like any oil-based balm it can mark fabric if you dress immediately, so give it a minute to absorb.
Why does it feel hard at first?
It is a true anhydrous butter with no water and no emulsifier, so it stays firm until warmed. Rub a small amount between your fingers for a few seconds and it turns to oil. That firmness is why a 2 oz tin lasts as long as it does.
There's no preservative — is that safe?
Yes, because there is no water in it. Microbes need water to grow, so anhydrous formulas do not require a preservative system. The one thing that breaks that is introducing water yourself, which is why we ask you to use dry hands or a scoop.
Is this product vegan?
No. It contains beeswax. It is cruelty-free and never tested on animals, but it is not vegan.
What's the shelf life?
12 months from production, stored away from heat and direct sun. Citrus oils are the first thing to age in a formula like this — if the scent turns sharp or the butter smells like old cooking oil, it is past its best. If it is left somewhere warm it may soften or melt; this does not spoil it, and it will re-firm, though the texture may be grainier afterward. LOT and production date are printed on each tin.
