A soft tan balm that melts the moment it touches skin. Chamomile, steeped slow.

Steeped Chamomile Body Butter is part of Common Ritual — the line built for how something feels, not just what it does. This is an anhydrous butter, meaning no water at all: shea, kombo seed butter, and hemp seed oil pressed into a balm that goes on firm and turns to oil against warm skin. Roman chamomile and green tea sit underneath, and a small amount of blue tansy carries the quiet herbal note the butter is named for.

Formulated by Rachel, Licensed Advanced Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) and Certified Skincare Coach — sensorial care, botanically scented.

🌿 Scent note: Scented with blue tansy flower oil. Soft, herbal, faintly sweet — closer to a warm tea than a perfume. No synthetic fragrance has been added.

Key Actives

  • Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter — the backbone of the formula. Rich in fatty acids and unsaponifiables that soften and hold moisture against the skin rather than evaporating off it.
  • Pycnanthus Angolensis (Kombo) Seed Butter — an uncommon West African butter, traditionally used for aching joints and irritated skin. It brings a distinctive comfort to the formula that shea alone does not.
  • Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil (Hemp Seed Oil) — one of the better-balanced plant oils for skin, with a high proportion of linoleic acid. Absorbs quickly for an oil and leaves very little behind. Contains no CBD or THC.
  • Chamaemelum Nobile (Roman Chamomile) Flower Extract — the calming heart of the formula, chosen for skin that gets easily annoyed by weather, friction, or fabric.
  • Tanacetum Annuum (Blue Tansy) Flower Oil — soothing, and long valued for calming skin that reacts to everything. The oil itself is famously deep blue, but at the small amount used here the color is absorbed by the butters around it — which is why the jar is warm tan rather than blue.
  • Camellia Sinensis (Green Tea) Leaf Extract — antioxidant support against everyday environmental stress.

Scent Notes

Herbal and soft. Chamomile tea left to steep a minute too long, with something green and slightly bitter underneath from the tansy. Not sweet, not floral in the perfume sense, and it fades close to the skin within an hour.

Who It's For

Anywhere you want skin to feel looked after. It is rich enough for the places that take real abuse — hands, heels, elbows, shins — but light enough on the skin that most people end up using it everywhere, straight out of the shower, without it feeling like too much.

Common Ritual products are built around how something feels to use. This one is for the minute at the end of the day when you are not fixing anything in particular.

If you react to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies, patch test this one carefully. Chamomile and blue tansy are both in the daisy family, and this formula contains both.

What to Expect

Firm in the jar, oil on the skin. It takes a moment of warmth between your fingers before it spreads, and that pause is the formula working as intended — a butter that spread instantly would be softer and greasier than this one. Skin stays comfortable for hours, and the places that were rough soften noticeably over a week or two of regular use.

The warm tan color is the unrefined butters and oils themselves. No colorant has been added, and it does not tint skin.

How to Use

  1. Scoop a small amount — less than you think, this goes further than lotion.
  2. Warm it between your fingertips until it turns to oil.
  3. Press and smooth it over skin rather than rubbing briskly — arms, legs, shoulders, wherever you like.
  4. Best applied to slightly damp skin straight after a shower, which gives it moisture to seal in.
  5. Go back over anywhere that wants more. Hands, heels, and elbows usually do.

Keep water out of the jar. This formula contains no water and therefore needs no preservative — but water introduced on wet fingers can spoil it. Use dry hands or a small scoop.

Safety & Warnings ▾

For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Daisy family allergy: Contains Roman chamomile and blue tansy, both members of the Asteraceae family. If you react to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, echinacea, or daisies, patch test before use or choose a different butter.

Contains beeswax. Avoid if you have a known bee product allergy.

Fabric: This is an oil-rich anhydrous butter. Give it a minute to absorb before dressing, as you would any body oil, to avoid marking clothing or bedding.

Body only. This is a rich anhydrous butter and is not formulated for the face. It may feel heavy or occlusive on facial skin.

Keep water out of the jar. This formula has no water and no preservative system. Introducing water on wet fingers can allow microbial growth. Use dry hands or a scoop, and close the lid firmly.

Patch test: New to this formula? Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and observe for 24 hours before first full use.

Pregnancy or nursing: As with any product containing botanical oils, consult your healthcare provider if you have questions about use during pregnancy or while nursing.

Keep out of reach of children.

Frequently Asked Questions ▾

Does the hemp seed oil contain CBD?
No. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seed, which contains no meaningful cannabinoids — no CBD, no THC. It is in this formula purely as a skin oil, chosen for its linoleic acid content and how quickly it absorbs. It will not show up on a drug test and it has no psychoactive effect.

Why is it tan and not white?
Because nothing in it has been bleached or refined into blandness. Unrefined shea carries its own soft yellow, kombo seed butter is naturally tan, and hemp seed oil is green — together they make the warm khaki you see in the jar. Blue tansy, despite being famously deep blue on its own, is used at too low a level to tint the finished butter. No dyes or colorants of any kind have been added.

Will it stain my skin or clothes?
Not skin. Like any oil-based balm it can mark fabric if you dress immediately, so give it a minute to absorb.

Why does it feel hard at first?
It is a true anhydrous butter with no water and no emulsifier, so it stays firm until warmed. Rub a small amount between your fingers for a few seconds and it turns to oil. That firmness is why a 2 oz jar lasts as long as it does.

Can I use it on my face?
We would not recommend it. This is formulated for body skin and is heavier than most people want on the face.

There's no preservative — is that safe?
Yes, because there is no water in it. Microbes need water to grow, so anhydrous formulas do not require a preservative system. The one thing that breaks that is introducing water yourself, which is why we ask you to use dry hands or a scoop.

Is this product vegan?
No. It contains beeswax. It is cruelty-free and never tested on animals, but it is not vegan.

What's the shelf life?
12 months from production, stored away from heat and direct sun. If it is left somewhere warm it may soften or melt — this does not spoil it, and it will re-firm, though the texture may be grainier afterward. LOT and production date are printed on each container.
