Nine plant oils, warm spice, and sugar. This one leaves something behind on purpose.
Gilded Spice Sugar Body Scrub is part of Common Ritual — the line built for how something feels, not just what it does. Where our Wild Mint scrub is built to rinse clean, this one is the opposite by design: a deep bed of sugar suspended in shea butter and nine plant oils, scented with clove, cinnamon, ginger, sweet orange, and vanilla. You step out conditioned rather than merely exfoliated.
Selected for Common Ritual by Rachel, Licensed Advanced Pharmacy Technician (CPhT-Adv) and Certified Skincare Coach — chosen for its oil profile and scented entirely with botanicals.
⚠️ Contains cinnamon, clove, and benzoin. These are common contact allergens. Please patch test — see safety information below.
Key Actives
- Sucrose (Sugar) — the exfoliant. Rounded granules that dissolve as you work, so the scrubbing eases off rather than continuing at full force until you stop.
- Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter — the body of the formula, and the reason this feels richer in the hand than most sugar scrubs.
- A nine-oil blend — jojoba, meadowfoam, evening primrose, borage, rosehip, coconut, avocado, olive, and sunflower. Borage and evening primrose are among the better plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid, and meadowfoam is unusually stable, which is what keeps a blend this oil-heavy from turning quickly.
- Cinnamon, Clove, and Ginger Oils — the warmth. Genuine spice oils rather than a fragrance recreation, which is both why it smells the way it does and why the safety notes below matter.
- Vanilla Planifolia Fruit Extract and Styrax Benzoin Resin — the sweet resinous base underneath the spice, rounding it into something closer to a baked scent than a hot one.
- Tocopherol (Vitamin E) — an antioxidant protecting nine plant oils from going off.
Scent Notes
Top: Sweet orange — bright and immediate.
Heart: Cinnamon, clove, and ginger — warm, dry, unmistakably spice.
Base: Vanilla and benzoin, resinous and sweet.
Closer to spiced baking than to a candle. It lingers on skin longer than the mint does.
Who It's For
Dry skin that wants conditioning as much as exfoliation. Good on legs, arms, and shoulders, and best in cold months when skin is rough and a heavier finish is welcome rather than a nuisance.
Not the right pick if you have sensitive skin or a history of reacting to fragranced products. Our Wild Mint scrub is the lighter, cleaner-rinsing option — though it carries its own cautions.
What to Expect
Skin comes out smooth and noticeably softened, with a light oil finish that absorbs over the next few minutes. Many people skip lotion afterward entirely. The spice warmth is aromatic rather than a heating sensation on skin — this is not a warming scrub, it just smells like one.
How to Use
- Give the jar a stir if the oils have settled on top.
- In the shower, turn the water off or step out of the stream.
- Scoop a small amount and massage over damp skin in circles.
- Rinse. Some oil will stay on your skin — that is intended.
- Pat dry rather than rubbing, and skip body lotion unless skin still asks for it.
Use once or twice a week. Rinse the tub thoroughly afterward — this formula is oil-rich and leaves a slick surface.

Safety & Warnings ▾
⚠️ Patch test before first use — this one genuinely matters. Cinnamon bark oil, cinnamon leaf oil, clove leaf oil, and benzoin resin are all recognized contact allergens, and this formula contains all four. Benzoin also cross-reacts with balsam of Peru, one of the most common positives in dermatology patch testing. Apply a small amount to the inner forearm and wait a full 24 hours before using it anywhere else.
Do not use if you have known sensitivity to cinnamon, clove, balsam of Peru, benzoin, or fragranced products generally.
⚠️ Slippery. This is an oil-rich scrub with no emulsifier, so it does not rinse away cleanly. Move carefully in the shower, hold on to something, and rinse the tub floor thoroughly afterward.
Keep water out of the jar. The formula has no water and no preservative system, so introducing water lets microbes grow. Scoop with dry hands before you get in, or use a dry spoon — do not dip wet fingers, and do not let shower spray into an open jar.
For external use only. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.
Body only. Not for the face, and not for intimate areas. Spice oils sting sharply on thin skin and mucous membranes.
Not for broken or irritated skin, sunburn, freshly shaved skin, or over a rash.
Pregnancy or nursing: This blend contains cinnamon, clove, and ginger essential oils. Consult your healthcare provider before use during pregnancy or while nursing.
Contains coconut oil. Avoid if you have a coconut allergy.
Keep out of reach of children.
Frequently Asked Questions ▾
Does it feel hot on the skin?
No. The warmth is entirely aromatic — cinnamon, clove, and ginger smell warm but this is not a heating scrub and it will not produce a burning sensation. If it does feel hot on you, that is a reaction and you should rinse it off.
Why does it need a patch test when other scrubs don't?
Because of the spice oils. Cinnamon and clove are among the most common causes of contact allergy in cosmetics, and benzoin cross-reacts with balsam of Peru, which a meaningful number of people are sensitive to without knowing. Twenty-four hours on your forearm costs you nothing and tells you what you need to know.
Will it leave my tub greasy?
Yes. There is no emulsifier in this one, so the oils stay behind — on your skin, which is the intent, and on the tub, which is not. Rinse the surface down afterward and take care with your footing. If you want a scrub that rinses clean instead, our Wild Mint has an emulsifier in it.
Do I still need body lotion after?
Usually not. Nine plant oils and shea butter leave enough behind that most people find lotion redundant. Pat dry rather than rubbing and see how skin feels before reaching for anything else.
How do I keep water out of an 8 oz jar in a shower?
Scoop what you need with dry hands before you get in, or keep a small dry spoon with it. Water in the jar is the one thing that will spoil this formula, since it has no preservative.
Is it seasonal?
It is available year-round, though the scent reads as cold-weather and most people reach for it more in winter.
What's the shelf life?
12 months from production, stored away from heat and direct sun. Keep water out of the jar. LOT and production date are printed on each container.
