Sun Protection, Quickly

Six common myths about sunscreen — and what the research actually says.

Sunscreen is one of the most evidence-supported tools in skin health, and one of the most misunderstood. These are the myths that come up most often — along with what is actually true.

Common Sunscreen Myths

Myth 01 “One morning application covers me all day.” SPF is tested at a thick, even layer most people do not apply in full. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors — sooner after swimming or sweating.
Myth 02 “SPF 100 is twice as strong as SPF 50.” SPF 50 blocks roughly 98% of UVB. SPF 100 blocks roughly 99%. The difference is about 2 percentage points — not double the protection.
Myth 03 “A base tan protects my skin.” A tan is visible damage — it is the skin’s emergency response to UV injury. It provides only an estimated SPF of 3–4, which is not meaningful protection.
Myth 04 “I’m inside, or it’s cloudy — I’m covered.” Up to 80% of UV passes through clouds. UVA passes through ordinary window glass. Indoor daily exposure adds up, especially near windows.
Myth 05 “My skin is dark enough to skip sunscreen.” Melanin offers only an estimated SPF of about 13. It does not prevent hyperpigmentation or skin cancer. Sun protection is relevant to every skin tone.
Myth 06 “Chemical sunscreens are toxic — only mineral is safe.” FDA studies found chemical filters are absorbed into the bloodstream. Absorption is not the same as harm. Both types, used as directed, protect skin effectively.

How Much to Actually Use

The practical version

For face and neck, aim for about a quarter teaspoon — or two full strips squeezed along the length of your index and middle fingers. For exposed areas of the body, roughly a shot glass worth. It will feel like more than you are used to. That is the point. Most people apply 25–50% of the amount SPF testing is based on, which significantly reduces real-world protection.
