AM & PM Skincare Routine Guide
Why the order of your routine matters, what each step does, and how to build a sequence that makes sense for your skin.
A skincare routine is not just a list of products — it is a sequence. The order in which you apply products affects how well each one absorbs, whether they interfere with each other, and how much your skin can actually benefit from them. This guide explains the logic behind a barrier-supportive routine and how to build one that fits your skin.
The Core Routine — AM & PM
Morning (AM)
Goal: protect the barrier from the day ahead.
1. Cleanser
Remove overnight sebum, product residue, and anything on the pillowcase. If your skin is not oily, a water rinse is sufficient.
Gentle, low-pH formula. Non-foaming for sensitive or dry skin.
2. Serum or treatment optional
Water-based actives (vitamin C, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid) go here, on clean skin before moisturizer.
Apply to slightly damp skin. Wait 30–60 seconds before next step.
3. Moisturizer
Seal in any previous layers and support the barrier through the day. Lighter formulas generally work better under SPF.
Apply while skin is still slightly damp from serum or water rinse.
4. SPF
Non-negotiable. UV exposure is the most consistent driver of barrier stress, premature aging, and hyperpigmentation. Apply as the final step.
Mineral SPF (zinc oxide) tends to be better tolerated on sensitive or reactive skin.
Evening (PM)
Goal: remove the day, support overnight barrier repair.
1. Oil or balm cleanser if wearing SPF/makeup
Dissolves oil-based products, sunscreen, and makeup. Rinse thoroughly.
First cleanse only. Follow with a water-based cleanser if needed (double cleanse).
2. Gentle cleanser
Remove any remaining residue. This step matters less if you did not wear SPF or makeup.
Same formula as AM. Do not over-cleanse — once at night is enough for most people.
3. Active treatment if using
Retinoids, exfoliating acids, and most intensive actives belong in the PM routine to avoid UV sensitivity and allow overnight action.
Introduce slowly. One active at a time. Not every night to start.
4. Moisturizer
Richer formulas are generally better tolerated at night. The skin’s repair processes are most active overnight.
Apply to slightly damp skin. A facial oil can be layered on top for added occlusion.
Why Order Matters
| Principle | Why It Matters |
|---|---|
| Thinnest to thickest | Lighter, water-based products absorb best on clean skin before heavier emollients or occlusives. Reversing this order reduces absorption and can prevent actives from reaching the skin. |
| pH-sensitive actives first | Vitamin C and exfoliating acids work best at a lower pH. Applying a higher-pH moisturizer immediately after can neutralize them before they have time to work. Wait 30–60 seconds between steps. |
| SPF always last in AM | Any product applied over SPF dilutes or disrupts the filter. SPF is the final step, always — nothing goes on top except makeup. |
| Actives at night | Retinoids cause photosensitivity. Exfoliating acids remove dead skin cells that protect against UV. Most actives are better used when they have overnight time to work without sun exposure. |
Principles for a Barrier-Supportive Routine
Fewer products, applied consistently, outperform a complex routine used inconsistently. A three-step routine done every day will always outperform a ten-step routine done when you remember it.
Introduce one new product at a time. Wait 5–7 days before adding another. If you react, you will know exactly what caused it.
Your routine should change with your skin and the seasons. A summer routine in humid heat is not the same as a winter routine in dry indoor air. Reassess when you notice your skin behaving differently.
More actives is not better. A single well-chosen active used correctly does more for your skin than three actives layered on a compromised barrier.
If your skin is reactive, simplify before you optimize. A stripped-down, barrier-first routine is always the starting point for troubleshooting.
My Current Routine
Use this space to write out your current products in order. Reviewing what you are using — and in what sequence — often reveals opportunities to simplify or improve.
